Practically thenost every child who swims there has been walking about in the shallow water with at least three or four of the little hoppers clutched in a moist paw. Speaking of Enfield, campers from other parts of the country are aghast when they hear of Ithaca area residents taking their tents and heading for distant campsites when vacation time comes. One camping couple, who had stopped public campsites across the nation for many years, have been coming to Enfield for the past five years, claiming that it's the best spot anywhere. The couple is from Michigan.

Today's Letter to the Editor column on Page 6 does not include a note regarding last Saturday's Short Take about the bad condition of Rte. 23 in the eastern part of the state. The reader who wrote the note didn't sign it, and it doesn't get printed for that reason. But a point made in the note deserves to be made to set the record straight. Rte.

23 is bad from Catskill to Windham Mountain, but not bad from the mountain west into Oneonta. Rte. 226 between Bainbridge and Greene is offered as worse yet, and the writer of the original Short Take agrees it's bad. Apparently it is bad on purpose because it's been that way for years. Board Offers Aid The Board of Zoning Appeals offered suggestions for improving the draft of the new ordinance, based on members' experience in the interpretation of the present 1950 zoning law.

The Zoning Committee of the Planning Board will study the suggestions for incorporation in the final draft of the ordinance, which will go to the Council in August. There was favorable comment on a provision to permit the Board of Zoning Appeals to get technical assistance from the Planning Board on applications for variances. Chairman Goodman said such a provision would enable the zoning board to get more easily the many facts and technical data necessary in making decisions in zoning appeals cases. Chairman Brown said this procedure of cooperation between the boards would help keep the Planning Board up to date on the condition of the zoning ordinance as needs may change from time to time in the future. is the first of the American servicemen to be tried. The four sailors are accused of attacking Oscar Trygve Heider, 57, on July 10, 1958. Heider was flown to Norfolk by the U.S. government to testify in the case. He told the sevenman court Tuesday the American sailors jumped him at an Oslo park, held him down and beat him.

"It was all so quick that I didn't get up my hands to guard my Heider. He said he still suffers "day and night" from headaches and from his eye injury. Sharabba was on the stand briefly to repudiate his part of a signed statement that mentioned Heider had been kicked. But he said it was true the four assaulted the Norwegian. "Yes, sir, I did hit him," Sharabba said.

Another defendant, Laurence C. Byres, 23, of Flushing, refused to discuss the incident on the ground it might incriminate him. The other defendants are Peter V. Mitchell, 20, of Wayne, N. and Dominic R.

A Norwegian chambermaid, Lilly Pettersen, said she saw sailors kick Heider, then run. Norway could have tried the sailors under a NATO agreement, but the Norwegian government decided to let the U.S. Navy try the men.
